When you are making the decision to undergo a joint replacement, there is a lot of information you have to take on board to ensure it is the right decision for you at this time. During your consultations with Mr Simon Bridle, his aim is always to ensure that you have all the necessary information, particularly in relation to the risks as well as the benefits.
Recently the Patient Decision Aid for Joint Replacement has been developed by researchers from the University of Sheffield, which helps to predict the likely benefits for each individual patient, as well as the risks and the chances of the very rare complications associated with hip replacement occurring. The tool uses information from over one million joint replacements, collected on the National Joint Registry, so represents very powerful data. Mr Bridle finds this provides very useful information and recommends that patients who are contemplating surgery use this simple to use tool.
The patients input information about their own health and the problems the joint is causing them and generates an individualised set of results for each patient. The tool then predicts how long the joint is likely to last and the risk of complications occurring.
